Exploring the Ocean Realm

Oceans have intrigued, frightened, and awed people for centuries. Although scientists have long been studying all aspects of the ocean, it’s only recently that we have begun to see that a healthy ocean depends on the delicate balance of complex dependencies between organisms and the unique environments in which they’re adapted to live. Altering or destroying any part of this intricate web threatens the stability of the whole ecosystem.

This unit focuses on oceanic organisms with which students are familiar, but about which they might not know much. Students will learn how the existence of all species, from the lowly algae to the misunderstood shark, is crucial to the survival of the ocean and of the entire planet.
