Sara Cole is a 2003 graduate of Swarthmore College where she majored
in history. It was at Swarthmore that she discovered a fascination with
education, especially in informal settings. This interest brought her
to the Citizen Schools in Boston, MA. There she spent a summer leading
teams of seven children on field trips and supervising other educational
activities.
While
leading a course in Origami at Citizen Schools, Sara realized how few
resources the organization had. She successfully solicited donations of
paper and instructions manuals from a top origami supply company, enough
for all her students. At the end of the course she taught her students
the importance of giving back, and they donated their final project of
hundreds of paper cranes to the local public library for display.
During her time at Swarthmore, Sara tutored several inner-city middle
school students before spending a summer as a deckhand and instructor
onboard the Schooner Alabama.
