Kate
Menser has extensive experience in both education and marine biology,
having earned her degrees in Biology and Education from Swarthmore College
and Lesley University, respectively. She has taught first, second, third
and fourth graders in the classroom, and pre-K through high school students
in an informal, environmental education setting.
Ms. Menser joined the Picton Castle in 1998 as the Leader of an educational
outreach team facilitating an onboard internet education project. It was
during that voyage that WorldWise was born, as Ms. Menser noticed the
tremendous need in most of the schools the team visited and discovered
the power of the Internet to influence teaching and learning in North
America. She founded WorldWise in April 2000 and began collecting used
school books, reading books, school supplies and maps from schools and
individuals throughout the U.S. and Canada. During the Picton Castle’s
second voyage (Nov 2000- June 2002), Ms. Menser facilitated the delivery
of more than 20 tons of donated school books, stationery supplies and
National Geographic maps to over 50 schools in 12 countries. More than
10,000 children benefited from these contributions. Ms. Menser also wrote
more than 170 esssays and took over 3,000 pictures of her experiences
onboard the Picton Castle and shared them with children around the world
via the Internet.
Since its inception, WorldWise, Inc. has raised over $200,00 toward its
dual missions of providing educational supplies to needy schools in developing
countries and providing an educational and culturally rich Web site for
students and homeschoolers.
