Erin
is a recent graduate of the University of King’s College, located
in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she has successfully completed a double
major in English and History (her favorite subject was the History of
Seafaring). Erin is looking forward to a life of sailing and to pursuing
a career in the education system as a Speech Language Pathologist.
Throughout her university career, Erin kept busy doing homework, working
Campus jobs, and following the Picton Castle’s World Voyages; but
her favorite jobs were the ones where she worked with students and with
Senior Citizens. Erin was a volunteer for a local elementary school’s
Breakfast Program, and also volunteered as a soccer coach for junior
high school and summer leagues. She was the Director of a sleep-away
camp for children ages 7-19 years of age, and was responsible for organizing
a physical and educational program for campers of all ability levels.
Erin has also worked as a Personal Care Worker in a local Nursing Home
and has volunteered with the Recreation Therapy department at a local
Veteran’s Hospital.
Erin’s interest in seafaring began in a small fishing community
in northern Cape Breton Island where she spent the first six years of
her life racing the other children to the end of the wharf hoping to
be the lucky one to receive a swordfish eye which, after a few hours
in the freezer, becomes the most prized marble around.
As she grew older, Erin took every available opportunity to learn about
life on the water. She is accomplished in Canoeing and has been a passenger
in dories, fishing boats, and catamarans alike.
Erin will be joining the Picton Castle on its Fourth World Voyage in
her official capacity as the Education Officer and, unofficially,
as Cape Bretoner Extrordinaire, lending her unique experiences and accent
to the diverse members of the crew.
